A former Worcester woman, 19 years of age, has been questioned by police for the alleged muggings of two men in January 2016. Though no arrests have been made, police have also identified a second individual they believe are linked to the two separate attacks. The website at the center of the case is meetme.com, according to court documents. It is a dating app that requires an email address for users to register. The intent is for users to connect with local people for meetups. Police are currently investigating if the person behind the account played a role in the attacks.
On the night of January 4th, a man, 19 years of age, told police that two men beat him in the stairwell of a building. His intent was to meet a woman. His phone was also stolen. The man’s attackers yelled at him for daring to meet up with the woman; they said, “she’s only 15” while beating him. Court documents show the victim had gone to the apartment building to smoke marijuana with his date.
In the early morning of January 10th, a man, 33 years of age, told police he had gone to meet up with a young woman when two men attempted to steal his phone and wallet. He said he was then stabbed. According to court documents, the victim told police he and the woman planned to have consensual sex.
As reported by Telegram.com, “Data requested by Worcester police from meetme.com for the woman showed she allegedly created a new profile with a similar name between the Jan. 4 and Jan. 10 incidents, and blocked the alleged victim of the first incident from her new page. In both cases, the user used an email address to set up the pages with the same woman’s name in the heading, officers said.”
The woman listed in court documents said that she allowed a friend who was living with her at the time to use her phone and online accounts. She said that she was “set up” and used her likeness to lure men to the apartment.
