Recently a judge sentenced the former St. Paul’s School student Owen Labrie to one year in prison for sexually assaulting a fellow student who was underage. The sentence comes on the end of a long, high profile trial that not only cast unfavorable light on the highly reputable school known for educating some of America’s top political leaders, but also exposed grotesque sexual practices of some of its students.
When Owen Labrie assaulted a 15-year old fellow student in 2014, he was partaking in a long-standing tradition at St. Paul’s called the Senior Salute. The Senior Salute is a competition among upperclassmen boys to see how many underclassmen girls they can have sex with. According to online documentation provided during the trial, Labrie was determined to win this competition and methodically targeted and lured his victim to a secluded room on campus where he then had sex with the her against her multiple objections. Labrie defense argued that the act was mutual throughout their interaction, however, that Labrie decided not to have sex with the victim at the last minute due to what he describes as a moment of “divine inspiration.”
As Merrimack County Superior Court Judge Larry M. Smukler sentenced Labrie, he describe the defendant as being a “very good liar” making reference to Labrie’s denial of his sexual assault and lack of regard for his victim. The victim remains traumatized by the event, stating that she has panic attacks, vivid flashbacks of the incident, and has difficulty showing affection towards loved ones. Labrie was also found guilty of a felony count of using a computer and Internet outlets such as Facebook and email to lure the girl. On top of his sentence, Labrie must register as a convicted sex offender for the next 15 years. He will remain free on bail while he appeals the court decision.
