With divorce being common, the number of reasons for obtaining a divorce can vary widely. While most couples seek to dissolve their marriage for reasons like lost passion or irreconcilable differences, some couples have cited reasons that are, shall we say, slightly more atypical than most others. On this blog, we examine three of these strange reasons that actual couples have used when filing for divorce.
Not Making It “Facebook Official”
Social media plays a massive role in modern divorces, often coming under scrutiny during the “discovery” phase. However, it is not always the reason for the divorce. One man found himself being served a divorce notice by his wife just two months after tying the knot. Her reason? She noticed he had failed to change his relationship status to “married.” The judge rejected the divorce case, and instead sentenced the couple to counseling.
Too Many Cats
Pets are an important part of the family, and pet custody can be a contentious issue. They don’t usually cause divorces, however. One man in Israel was surprised when he discovered his wife had welcomed not one, not two, but 550 cats into their home as pets. While he initially supported his wife’s decision, the amount of money they spent on cat food and sheer number of cats in every corner of the house eventually drove him to file for divorce.
Beauty (Literally) Skin Deep
A man in China thought his dreams had come true when he married his gorgeous wife who he was absolutely enamored with. However, when she birthed their first child, he realized that not only did the girl not resemble either of them, she was, as he described her, “horrifically ugly.” Fearing that she would be accused of adultery, his wife finally confessed that she had spent more than $100,000 on plastic surgery to give her the stunning good looks that had won the man over. The man sued her, won his case, and obtained a divorce.
