Statistics Regarding Juvenile Crimes

The most common reason that juveniles commit crimes against other people is out of revenge. This means that most juveniles commit crimes against someone they feel has wronged them in some way. Also, according to a recent study, the majority of the victims are adults while only 38% of victims are other juveniles.

Types of juvenile crimes most commonly committed in Massachusetts include:

  • Larceny (24% of all juvenile crimes)

  • Aggravated assault (19% of all juvenile crimes)

  • Vandalism (14% of all juvenile crimes)

  • Simple assault (13% of all juvenile crimes)

  • Drug violations (9% of all juvenile crimes)

Larceny is the theft of personal property, and is the most common crime committed by Massachusetts juveniles today. Aggravated assault often results in serious injury and is the second most common juvenile crime. Vandalism, on the other hand, can range from the outright destruction of another person’s property to simply painting graffiti or “tagging” another person’s property.

Simple assault is less severe than aggravated assault, and includes mutually consented fist fights and other minor altercations that do not result in serious injury. Lastly, drug charges may involve possession, manufacturing, and intent to distribute. In Massachusetts, juvenile drug crimes involve a wide variety of drugs ranging from marijuana to heroin.

Penalties for Juvenile Crimes

The juvenile justice system in Massachusetts refers to juvenile charges as “delinquencies,” and a juvenile offender can involve any person between the ages of 7 and 17 years old. Penalties for juvenile crimes range from restitution and fines to juvenile detention, and the court may order counseling or other positive methods to help rehabilitate the juvenile offender. At Murphy & Rudolf, LLP, our knowledgeable Worcester criminal defense lawyers can help a juvenile seek a fair trial and can also push a judge to order counseling or therapy sessions in lieu of other punishments.
